Lopez Lomong, rifugiato del Darfur, portabandiera Usa a Pechino

Gli atleti americani hanno scelto, votando, il loro portabandiera della loro nazionale olimpica alla cerimonia inaugurale di Pechino. Non sarà un campione, come il nostro Rossi. Sarà un mezzofondista, un uomo di fatica, da 1.500 metri, con poche chanches di vittoria. Ma è un simbolo. L’atleta americano più imgombrante di tutti per ciò che rappresenta. Si chiama Lopez Lomong, è un profugo sudanese. A 6 anni è riuscito a scappare da un campo profughi nel Darfur. I miliziani islamici volevano farne un baby soldato. Lui è scappato dal campo. Ha corso per 10 chilometri fino al confine. Continua a corrrere anche oggi, alle Olimpiadi, “perché la gente sappia cosa è accaduto in Sudan durante la guerra civile e cosa sta succedendo ancora oggi nel Darfur”. “When we were in Africa, we didn’t know what was there for us as kids, we just ran. God was planning all of this stuff for me, and I didn’t know. Now I’m using running to get the word out about how horrible things were back in Sudan during the war. Sometimes these things are not on CNN, so if I put out the word, I hope people can get the information. Right now, similar terrible things are going on in Darfur; people are running out of Darfur, and I put myself in their shoes.”
